Our Practices

At Budding Moon, we view our farm as it’s own system and as a piece of the larger systems that are our community and world.  As such, we make decisions to protect and support the environment, creatures, and people that make up those systems.  Some of our current practices include:

   – Limited Tillage – soil is worked primarily with a broadfork and hoes after an initial pass of the rotary plow

– Veggie Rx Program – providing low price veggies to households using CHIP, Medicaid, and/or SNAP – Veggie Rx Info

   – Cover Cropping – we plant clovers, oats, buckwheat, barley, peas, and more to enrich, rest, and protect the soil

– Pay ‘what’s right for you’ CSA (similar to sliding scale models)

   – Composting – we do this with as much plant material as possible to retain nutrients and improve soil health

   – No Synthetic Fertilizer – compost and cover crops provide the nutrients for our plants

   – No Pesticides – we use hand picking and exclusion to keep out pests

   – No Herbicides –  weeding is done by hand

   – Intercropping – we plant a number of different vegetables in the same area to promote diversity in the soil

– Movable Tunnels – these allow for season extension while ensuring all areas get exposed to the natural elements and cover-cropped to maximize soil health

   – Planting Insectaries and Perennials – this attracts pollinators and other beneficial insects
